A preservation-focused building owner at 666 West End Avenue sought to restore two historic Royal Stone balustrade porches that had fallen into disrepair. Their vision centered on maintaining the building’s original architectural character while ensuring the new structures were durable, weather-resistant, and built to last for decades.

Project Overview

Client Background
The building owner, focused on preservation, sought to maintain the historic character of this landmark property while addressing serious deterioration. Their vision was clear: restore the porches to look exactly as they once did while ensuring they were structurally sound and built to last.

Objective
Recreate and install two Royal Stone balustrade porches. One at the front of the building and one along the right side, that matched the original design. The goal was to replicate the historic aesthetic while strengthening safety, durability, and weather resistance.

Scope

  • Restored and replicated two porches with historically accurate Royal Stone balustrades.

  • One porch at the main frontage and a larger porch along the right side.

  • Incorporated modern improvements such as enhanced weatherproofing and reinforced durability.

Key Details

  • Location: 666 West End Avenue, New York City.

  • Number of Porches: Two (front and right side).

  • Special Features: Historically accurate replication through 3D scanning of original balustrades; improved weatherproofing while maintaining the authentic look.

Design Approach and Execution

Design Philosophy: A strict historical replication approach, ensuring the new porches were visually indistinguishable from the originals while bringing them up to modern standards of strength and longevity.

Execution

  • Conducted on-site 3D scanning of the deteriorated balustrades to capture exact dimensions and details.

  • Fabricated precise replicas of each balustrade component for one-to-one accuracy.

  • Installed the new porches, ensuring level alignment, durability, and seamless integration with the building façade.

At 666 West End Avenue in New York City, we restored the porches to their original design. The old structures were failing, but now they’re rebuilt to last being healthy, durable, and true to the building’s historic character.
